Não é Não

In her own words, Julia explains the beginning of the Não é Não movement. “During the festivities of Carnival in Brazil sexual harassement to women, in public places, increases. “No is No” is the most simple and direct way to state the obvious; the right to say “No”. More than a message to abusive men, it is a reminder that, as women, we can say “no”. It’s not normal to be sexually harassed during Carnival nor anytime of the year. The goal is to create awareness and to fight everyday sexism. Together, women have to break the silence and not tolerate this behaviour. And most importantly, we are together.”

“No is No!” has resonated in Brazil mostly because respect to a womans’ body is not a reality in this country.”
